Used batteries and electrical equipment should be kept out of ordinary household waste. JD provides an in-store portable battery recycling point at our Cannock store and operates the applicable electrical equipment take-back requirements.

BRING YOUR USED PORTABLE BATTERIES TO JD.
JD provides free in-store take-back for suitable waste portable batteries at our Cannock store.

You do not need to have bought the battery from JD and you do not need to purchase a replacement battery simply to use our portable battery recycling collection point.

Our collection point is not limited to airsoft batteries or brands sold by JD. Portable batteries covered by the retailer take-back requirements can be accepted.

Please bring batteries to us in person during normal shop opening hours. Do not send waste batteries to JD using ordinary postal or parcel services.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW?
CURRENT UK RETAILER REQUIREMENTS
FREE PORTABLE BATTERY TAKE-BACK
THE 32KG RETAILER RULE
WHEN MUST RETAILERS PROVIDE BATTERY TAKE-BACK?
UK retailer rules require businesses that sell or supply 32kg or more of portable batteries each year to provide free take-back of waste portable batteries.

The Government uses approximately one pack of four AA batteries per day as an example of the amount that would reach roughly 32kg over a year.

JD provides a portable battery collection point at our Cannock premises.
NO PURCHASE REQUIRED
YOU DO NOT NEED TO BUY A NEW BATTERY.
There is no charge for using JD's portable battery take-back point.

You do not need to purchase a replacement battery when returning a covered waste portable battery.

The returned battery does not need to have originally been purchased from JD.

The retailer take-back scheme covers portable batteries generally, not just the particular battery types or brands sold by the retailer.

A portable battery is generally a sealed battery that can be carried without difficulty by an average person.

WHAT BATTERIES CAN I BRING?
COMMON PORTABLE BATTERIES
Examples of waste portable batteries include:

Airsoft rechargeable battery packs.
LiPo battery packs.
Li-Ion batteries.
NiMH rechargeable batteries.
AA batteries.
AAA batteries.
9V batteries.
Button and coin-cell batteries.
Batteries from torches and other portable devices.
Rechargeable batteries from suitable portable equipment.
WHAT IS NOT PART OF STANDARD PORTABLE TAKE-BACK?
Automotive batteries, such as car and motorcycle batteries, are not covered by the standard retailer portable-battery take-back requirement.

Certain industrial batteries are also subject to separate producer and recycling arrangements.

If you are unsure what type of battery you have, contact JD before bringing it to the store.

JD's recycling collection point is an in-store service.

Please bring waste batteries to our Cannock shop in person.

Do not place used LiPo, lithium-ion or other waste batteries into ordinary postal or parcel networks for return to JD.
TAPE EXPOSED LITHIUM BATTERY TERMINALS
Where practical and safe to do so, cover exposed lithium battery terminals with suitable non-conductive tape before recycling.

This helps reduce the risk of the terminals touching metal objects and creating a short circuit.

Keep waste batteries away from loose metal items such as coins, screws, tools or keys while transporting them.
DAMAGED OR SWOLLEN LIPO BATTERIES
Do not continue charging or using a LiPo or lithium battery that is swollen, punctured, leaking, physically damaged or becoming unusually hot.

A badly damaged lithium battery can present a significant fire risk.

If you have a seriously damaged battery, contact JD before travelling so that we can advise whether our collection arrangements are suitable for that particular battery.
REMEMBER
DO NOT THROW BATTERIES IN GENERAL WASTE.
Separate used batteries from ordinary household rubbish and use a suitable battery collection or recycling point.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE BATTERIES?
APPROVED RECYCLING ROUTES
Waste batteries collected through retailer take-back arrangements must ultimately be sent through the appropriate approved treatment and recycling route.

Battery compliance schemes can arrange collection of retailer waste batteries so they are sent for appropriate treatment and recycling.

JD handles its collected batteries through the recycling arrangements applicable to our business rather than disposing of them as ordinary waste.

WEEE RECYCLING
WHAT IS WEEE?
WEEE stands for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment.

The UK WEEE Regulations are designed to reduce the amount of electrical and electronic waste being disposed of incorrectly and to encourage appropriate reuse, recovery and recycling.

Electrical products can contain useful materials that can be recovered, as well as substances that should not simply be sent to landfill.
LIKE-FOR-LIKE
BUY NEW ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT? RETURN THE OLD EQUIVALENT.
Where the WEEE retailer take-back requirement applies, JD provides a route for customers to return waste electrical or electronic equipment of the same type as, or performing the same basic function as, the new equipment being purchased.

The old product does not need to be the same brand as the new product.

The requirement can apply whether the new item is purchased in-store, online or by mail order.

The take-back service itself is free where the waste item is returned through the applicable in-store arrangement.
RETURN PERIOD
AT LEAST 28 DAYS TO RETURN YOUR OLD ITEM
Where JD provides the applicable in-store WEEE take-back service, customers are given at least 28 days to bring back their eligible old electrical or electronic item.

If you want to use JD's WEEE take-back service, contact us before travelling so we can confirm that the item falls within the appropriate category and explain the return process.

The crossed-out wheeled-bin symbol means that the battery or electrical product should be collected separately from ordinary household waste.

It should be taken through an appropriate recycling or separate collection route.

GREAT BRITAIN
JD's Cannock store is located in Great Britain.

The existing UK battery and waste-battery regulations continue to form the basis of the Great Britain requirements described on this page.

The UK Government has indicated that further battery regulation reform is being considered, so JD will update this information where relevant requirements change.
NORTHERN IRELAND
Northern Ireland is subject to a separate battery product regime under the EU Batteries Regulation through the Windsor Framework.

A number of requirements are being introduced in stages, including updated product, information, labelling and future removability requirements.

This page primarily describes JD's Cannock battery collection service and the Great Britain retailer requirements.

Customers or businesses with a Northern Ireland battery compliance question should contact JD before ordering if the regulatory treatment of a particular product is important.

DO I HAVE TO BUY A NEW BATTERY TO RECYCLE ONE?
No. JD's portable battery take-back service is free and you do not need to purchase a replacement battery.
DOES THE BATTERY NEED TO HAVE BEEN BOUGHT FROM JD?
No. The portable battery take-back requirement is not limited to batteries originally sold by JD or to the particular brands we stock.
CAN JD RECYCLE AIRSOFT LIPO BATTERIES?
Suitable waste portable rechargeable batteries, including many airsoft LiPo, Li-Ion and NiMH battery packs, can be accepted through our collection point.

Where the WEEE take-back rules apply, an eligible old electrical or electronic item can be returned when purchasing a new item of the same type or performing the same basic function.

The old product does not have to be the same brand.
