The AR-15 was first designed by Eugene Stoner and L. James Sullivan in 1959, with the rights sold to Colt and advertised as made with modern materials, lightweight, with higher stopping power, and requiring little to no maintenance, the AR-15 was adopted by the United States Military as the M16 in 1964 during the height of the Vietnam War to replace the heavier, more rugged M14 rifle. After the lessons learned from Vietnam, the United States Marine Corps requested an update in 1979, and the M16A2 was adopted by the Marines in 1983 with are United States Army following suit in 1986. The M16A2 has a thicker barrel allowing for longer periods of sustained fire and resisting barrel bending on the field, the M16A2 also has better sights and a spent case deflector. Something controversial to the M16A2 was the introduction of the full auto being set to 3-round burst due to limit the amount of ammo wasted by inexperienced troops under fire. The M16A2 rifle saw front-line service from Operation Urgent Fury and Just Cause all the way to Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm until it was slowly phased out for the M16A4 in 1997 while the A2 variant continued to serve rear-echelon troops like the U.S. Army Reserve and the National Guard.

Garand Thumb, a famous YouTuber once made a video on the M16A2 and dubbed it as "The Worst Service Rifle Upgrade", which is mostly just poking fun and creating a "clickbaity" video title, although he did mention that he enjoys the aesthetics of the M16A2 with an M203 attached over anything, it is a lot of the "upgrades" from the M16A1 to the A2 did not make sense, which is just the theme with most US government procurements.

The VFC Colt M16A2 GBB Airsoft Rifle is fully licensed by Colt and Cybergun, again adding to their collection of replica Cold War weaponry. After the launch of the XM16E1 and then the M16A1, fans were expecting more, and more did come! Externally, this gas airsoft rifle has all the M16A2 style furniture and features, with a bird cage style flash hider, A2 style iron sights, handguard, pistol grip, and stock. One extra cool feature is the fire controls, instead of the usual Safe, Semi, and Auto, the "Auto" was switched to "Burst" for a 3-round burst, and this isn't just the markings, this gun actually fires in 3 round burst instead of full auto which is really cool seeing that they kept it realistic. The attention to detail doesn't end there as it has period correct, early styled deep engraved Colt markings on the receiver as well as on the bottom of the 30-round gas magazine that it comes with.

Internally, as being produced by VFC it is no slouch as this bad boy runs on the tried and tested VFC V3 M4 / AR 15 gas system and it has an updated valve knocker system, a zinc bolt carrier, and of course as mentioned earlier, a VFC 30 round V3 gas magazine to feed the system. In simple terms, this rifle is ready to be fielded like any other VFC-made M4 / AR-15-styled gas airsoft rifles that came before it and it will perform superbly and you also would not have to worry about aftermarket parts or accessories as there is plenty to go for and it will not cost you an arm or a leg.

The M16A2 rifle has seen service from the end of the Cold War to the beginning of the War on Terror and is probably still kept and used today for training, reserves, and other non-front-line roles. So if you have been waiting to dust off your M81 Woodland camo, now is the time!
